About the Dallas Greening Initiative and Bushmills Rd.

Trust for Public Land is excited to share that the property located at Bushmills Rd. (10600 Black Walnut Dr, Dallas, TX 75243) is part of the Dallas Greening Initiative. This means it will be designated as a neighborhood greenspace that will be open to the public.

Living within 10 minutes of a park or greenspace can increase a person’s mental and physical health and enhance quality of life. For communities, quality green spaces help close the outdoor equity gaps, combat the effects of climate change, and foster social unity. However, Trust for Public Land’s (TPL) ParkScore® Index revealed that over 300,000 Dallas residents lack access to a nearby park.

In 2022, Mayor Eric Johnson requested an inventory of vacant city-owned land that could be redeveloped into public green spaces across the city and appointed Garrett Boone as the city’s first Greening Czar to develop strategies to increase park access for Dallas residents. To help close that gap, Trust for Public Land is partnering with Dallas Park and Recreation and the Mayor’s office in this greening initiative to transform unused city-owned land into new neighborhood parks across Dallas.

The Dallas Greening Initiative program is designed to improve the health, equity, and climate resilience of neighborhoods throughout the city where it's needed most. Using TPL’s Smart Growth for Dallas Tool, a computer-assisted geo-mapping software, Trust for Public Land pinpointed the vacant properties listed in the inventory that are located in Dallas’ largest and highest-need park deserts.

The program aims to not only increase the number of Dallas residents who have a greenspace within a 10-minute walk of their home but also to ensure that nearby residents are part of the process. Throughout 2024, Trust for Public Land led a participatory design and engagement process, gathering input from neighborhood leaders, residents, and youth through design meetings, surveys, and online engagement tools. This feedback informed and shaped the greenspace's design, features, and amenities. Site preparation is underway, with construction expected to begin as early as August 2025.

Dallas Greening Initiative Community Meeting: 4/22

Join us to learn more about the Bushmills Rd. greenspace design, enjoy FREE snacks, and more!
Join Trust for Public Land for our third community meeting on April 22 from 6:00-7:30 pm at the Forest-Audelia Boxing Gym. Attendees will be able to see the updated greenspace design, hear about the latest project updates, share their thoughts, and learn how they can get involved with their future greenspace. October 10th is National Walk to a Park day! To celebrate, Trust for Public Land is hosting a scavenger hunt at participating Dallas Greening Initiative greenspaces, including your future greenspace at Bushmills Rd!

Dallas Greening Initiative Pop-Up Park: 3/9

Join Trust for Public Land and Better Block on March 9 from 11:00 am - 3 pm to envision what you want to see in your future greenspace as Better Block transforms the space into a "Pop-Up Park" with temporary amenities and furnishings.
Come share your ideas and enjoy an exciting day outdoors filled with FREE food, music, prizes, and interactive activities at 10600 Black Walnut Dr!

Better Block Foundation Volunteer Workshops

Join the Better Block Foundation during one of their volunteer workshops at the Better Block Office! The workshops will explore placemaking and focus on staining and sanding interior pieces for a mobile Pop-Up Park container.
All ages welcome, and no experience is needed — just bring your enthusiasm!
